2006, presented the “Charlie Joiner Winning Spirit Award” given in recognition to individuals who are pillars of the community.

2005, awarded San Diego's “Channel 10 Leadership Award.” He also received this award in 1992.

2000, selected as one of "San Diego Magazine's 50 People to Watch in 2000."

1998, honored as one of President George Bush's "Points of Light"

1997, given "Honorary Service Award", Recognition of "Outstanding Service to Children and youth" by California Congress of Parents, Teachers, and Students, Inc.

1993, President Bill Clinton presented him with the "President's Volunteer Action Award," the most prestigious and highest award given in the United States.

1992, presented "Dr. Thomas A. Dooley Award" by the University of Notre Dame in recognition of outstanding service to the community. Dr. Nigro was the first physician to receive this award.

Dr. Nigro's impact has been experienced locally and world wide. He will be dearly missed but his legacy continues on in the compassion of our volunteers and the smiles of our patients.
