Surgery Weekend Volunteer

Surgery Weekends volunteer opportunities for kids are 6-7 times per year at The Fresh Start Clinic at Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego. Volunteer shifts usually last 4-5 hours and include food and great company. If you are interested in volunteering at a Surgery Weekend, fill out the Application Form and then wait for an e-mail with next-step instructions as a nonprofit volunteer for children!

Anesthesiologist


Volunteer Anesthesiologists must be licensed and credentialed to practice in California, must be Board Certified or eligible, must possess and provide proof of current California licensure, DEA, and proof of malpractice insurance, must possess and provide proof of valid BCLS and ACLS certifications, and must be a currently practicing anesthesiologist at a JCAHO accredited facility with experience in treating children and young adults. CLICK HERE TO VOLUNTEER

Anesthesia Technologist


Anesthesia Technologists must be trained and currently practicing in a JCAHO accredited facility. CLICK HERE TO VOLUNTEER

Chart Monitor


Chart Monitors are stationed in the Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) and help prepare patient charts for post-surgery appointments. Training will be provided and no experience is necessary. CLICK HERE TO VOLUNTEER

Children’s Activities


Play with patients and their siblings while they wait for an appointment. Supplies are provided and some Spanish is helpful but not necessary. CLICK HERE TO VOLUNTEER

Circulating RN


Circulators must provide proof of current licensure to practice in California as a registered nurse, must posses and provide proof of valid BCLS and ACLS certifications, and must have prior experience as a circulator. CLICK HERE TO VOLUNTEER

Interpreter


Volunteer Interpreters facilitate communication between patients and caregivers. Bilingual in Spanish and English is preferred, but other language specialties are encouraged to contact Fresh Start for placement. CLICK HERE TO VOLUNTEER

Laser Treatment Practitioner


Because of the variety of cases we treat, we use both Syneron Lasers and V-Beam lasers during Surgery Weekends. Volunteers must provide proof of current licensure to practice in California as a registered nurse or physician’s assistant and must have training and experience in laser treatments. CLICK HERE TO VOLUNTEER

Laser Treatment Prep Support


Laser Treatment Prep volunteers help prepare patients for laser treatment appointments by shaving treatment areas (usually around the ear) and applying a numbing cream. Training will be provided and no experience necessary. CLICK HERE TO VOLUNTEER

Overnight Caregiver


Overnight Caregivers provide one-on-one care and instruction of patients during the evening after their surgery. Volunteers must posses valid CPR certifications and must be an RN, CMA or MA with experience with post-surgery needs. Volunteers receive a stay in their own room at the hotel.CLICK HERE TO VOLUNTEER

Patient Reception


Patient Receptionists help check-in patients for appointments during Surgery Weekends. Volunteers must possess some knowledge of Spanish. CLICK HERE TO VOLUNTEER

Post Anesthesia Care Unit RN


PACU RNs must provide proof of current licensure to practice in California as a registered nurse and must posses valid BCLS and ACLS certifications. PACU, ICU, ER, or PICU experience is helpful. CLICK HERE TO VOLUNTEER

Post-Op


Post-OP providers can be RNs, LVNs or MAs with experience in post-op dressing changes. Volunteers must provide proof of current licensure to practice in California and must posses valid BCLS certification. CLICK HERE TO VOLUNTEER

Pre-Op RN


Pre-OP RNs must provide proof of current licensure to practice in California as a registered nurse, Pre-Op experience preferred, and volunteers must posses valid BCLS certification. CLICK HERE TO VOLUNTEER

Scrub RN/Surgical Technologist


Scrub RNs must provide proof of current licensure to practice in California as a registered nurse, must have experience as a scrub RN, must provide proof of training and have experience scrubbing, and must posses valid CPR and BCLS certifications. CLICK HERE TO VOLUNTEER

Speech and Language Pathologist


Volunteer Speech and Language Pathologists help patients with oral/maxillo-facial deformities communicate more effectively. Volunteers must possess valid California licensure to practice as a Speech and Language Pathologist. Bilingual in Spanish/English is helpful but not necessary. CLICK HERE TO VOLUNTEER

Sterile Processing Department (SPD)


Sterile Processing Department Volunteers facilitate the success of the day by quickly and efficiently turning over rooms between surgeries. Volunteers will be performing tasks such as wiping down OR beds, taking out trash, mopping the OR floors, and etc. SPD or back office experience is helpful but not necessary. CLICK HERE TO VOLUNTEER

Surgeon/Physician

Transportation


Transportation Volunteers drive patient in the Fresh Start van to and from Surgery Weekend appointments. Volunteers must possess a valid California driver’s license and proof of insurance and must pass a DMV record check. CLICK HERE TO VOLUNTEER

Volunteer Host


Help make the weekend flow smoothly: check-in volunteers and serve meals to volunteers, patients and families. Training will be provided and no experience is necessary. CLICK HERE TO VOLUNTEER

Wrap-Up Hero
