Catherine Liu, M.D., Ph.D. 

Catherine Liu, M.D., Ph.D., is a board-certified ophthalmologist who specializes in facial reconstructive and cosmetic surgery, including surgeries of the eyelid and periorbital region. 

Her patients may have a range of conditions that can benefit from surgery, including age-related changes affecting the eyelid, tumors of the eyelid and orbit and complex conditions that require reconstruction. 

Dr. Liu has experience in ptosis repair, blepharoplasty, lacrimal disease, eyelid and orbital oncology, blepharospasm and hemifacial spasm, orbital fractures, craniofacial disorders involving the eyelid and orbit and pediatric oculoplastics, as well as surgical and nonsurgical facial rejuvenation. 

As an associate professor at UC San Diego School of Medicine, Dr. Liu is an active researcher in oculofacial surgery and the molecular genetic component of various orbital conditions. 

Dr. Liu is among an elite group of surgeons to complete an American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ASOPRS) fellowship with specialty training in reconstruction of the eyelid, orbit and lacrimal system. 

She completed her oculofacial plastic surgery fellowship at Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary, University of Illinois College of Medicine. She completed residency training in ophthalmology at UC Irvine School of Medicine, later earning a medical degree and doctorate in cell biology from Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York.
