Valery
Valery was born with a cleft lip and palate, a condition that requires extensive evaluations, medical exams and multiple reconstructive surgeries. This condition made it harder for Valery to eat and if left unchecked, would lead to speech issues in the future. Valery’s journey with Fresh Start Surgical Gifts began under the care of volunteer plastic surgeon Dr. Melissa Kanack, M.D., and the dedicated Fresh Start volunteer medical team at Rady Children’s Hospital.
Her initial surgeries were performed by Dr. Amanda Gosman, M.D., on May 30, 2016. During this operation, Valery underwent a surgical repair of her bilateral cleft lip and palate as well as a bilateral cleft rhinoplasty.
The next stage of her treatment took place on March 14, 2017, when she had a cleft palate repair, a silicone nasal stent and a cleft repair with a two-flap palatoplasty and intravelar veloplasty with vomer flaps. These surgeries were pivotal in improving Valery’s ability to eat, speak and breathe properly.
Valery’s third stage of reconstructive surgery was completed on July 13, 2024. This procedure, an alveolar bone grafting (ABG), repaired the hole in her gum ridge and stabilized the bone arch. This surgery was essential as it provided better support for the base of the nose and a new bone for the roots of her developing teeth to grow into, significantly improving her overall facial structure and function.
